Good vs. Evil

Lady Macbeth advises her husband to “Look like the innocent flower, / But be the serpent under it” (I.v.66-67). What is an example of something in the modern world that presents itself as an “innocent flower” when it is really a “serpent”? How were you able to see through the sweet disguise to see the evil within?

  1. It would seem hard to see through a "sweet disguise" because if it was a clever enough disguise there would be no way to see past it.

  2. An example of something acting like a innocent flower, but being the serpent, could be something like a person. Someone who lies or cheats or steals. You can see thorugh their exterior to who they really are on the inside. It is easy to see thorugh these people because they can only hold up their act for so long. They can only act like a good person for so long until they break, and do their lying, cheating, and stealing that honestly makes them who they are.

  3. An example that would represent this ordeal is that when you meet new people and they have a past then they will be the "innocent flower" and really they may have a past or have secrets that would make them a "serpent", we can be able to see through the disguise by knowing from their actions or own words.

  4. Something in today's world that couls relate to that quote is simply a normal human. They can go out to the world being a good person who has a good job seems happy with life, but at night or even with something simple that could change their acts in a split second. That person could go out to the world and drug girls and rape them outside of his act of being a perfectly normal human being. Until someone gets suspicious or he finally starts to lose it, no one can know. A person can only hide something for so long and that's what happened to Lady Macbeth when she became a mute after realizing what Macbeth was turning into.

  5. A good example of someone being portrayed as an inocent flower when they are really a serpent is satin for one thing, but friends that tell you its ok to lye and cheat every once in a while or someone who tells you to do drugs because its cool but then turns around and acts like it was no big deal. I hope that makes sense.

  6. an example of this could be a first impression, when you met someone new they can be the nicest person you ever meet but when you get to know them they are not as nice as you thought or you can be the greatest of friends and then something later happens adn their true colors show.

  7. in the real world high schoolers always act like the most innocent little flowers but its only skin deep. the serpent comes out behind peoples backs in countless ways. to see it for yourself all you have to do is stop and think about some of the things said on a daily basis in the high school setting

  8. An example of an "innocent flower" and "serpent" situation i think is the ordinary teenager. We grew up carefree and innocent with not anything to hold us back or to harm us. We come into our teen years with a fresh slate. The older we get there are more influences out there, drugs, alchohol, etc. At least once in our lifes we want to try it out and since peer presure is such a huge thing happening in highschool or college or what ever you are associated with some of us will fall into that. Some will still have that set look of innocence but may have something underneath thats not to innocent.

I agree with you. How many peers do you know who have 2 different lives when their at school and at home. I know countless people who do things and say things they would never do if their parents knew. It's just how life is these days.

  10. Something in todays world that would act as a "sweet disguise" I believe would be alcohol. Hidden behind it's flavor but what it really does to you is not quite so good. For one, depending on how much you drink it is distroying your liver. Your body at that. Or just the way drunk people act. I'm sure most of us have been around or seen a drunk person. I know everybody acts different so don't get me wrong. Some people are hilarious when they are drunk. But on the otherhand some people are very violent. I know many violent drunks, funny ones too. Or just heard stories, which i know is not the same thing, but still.

  14. Children are a good example i think. Around their parents or people they are trying to make a good impression on, they act like little angels. but when they are around their siblings, for example they are really little devils and can be really cruel. so to certain people they appeare to be "innocent flowers" but behind the curtain they are really "serpents"

  15. so i am going to bring polotics into to this. i find they are a great example of innocents and serpents. their adds on telivision are made to make them look good and innocent and like they want to do good. but in truth they are just in it for the money and press coverage. they may look good but half the time they end up being worse then some people tend to realize.

  16. Good vs. Evil is a very confusing subject. First impressions are very important. Some people may think your a bad person but just looking at you, and same with people thiking you are a good person. in my oppinion, you swhouldn't be able to tell how a person is by just looking at them. you have to take the time to know them.

  17. Because a person "looks like a flower" but may be a serpeant underneath, there is no way to tell at first if they are going to be shady or not. I strongly believe in believing in a person's intentions at first, until they do something to change your mind about them. A fake girl seems nice at first, so you have to find her true colors before judging her first hand.

  18. I think it depends on what each side's views are because, to the evil side, they are good, and the evil side thinks the good side is evil and visa-versa

  19. the word good and the world evil really have no sure deffinition. Its up to the person to say whats good, its more like good is an opinion because what you think is good might not really be good. For example macbeth thought that being king and having total control would be good. But that wasn't how everybody else thought. In my opinion i say its more like 2 differnt opponions instead of good vs evil, because what good? and whats really evil?

  21. i think a person could seem innocent on the outside, but the people who know that get to seee how they really are on the inside, and everyone will eventually see the truth because you cant keep the trruth away, people will always find out.

  22. i agree
ithink people in general have a good and evil side, sosme poeple just choose not to show both. sometimes people can seem like one thing and be something completley different. like friends, you'll always have them. but there will be times when you get in fights or your friends with the wrong person and in time i promise you there will be a point in your friendship wehere you are both trash talking eachother. you put on a smile when your around eachpother and act normal but when yor not together i garantee you will atleast make one comment thats bad about them and they'll do the same to you. you'll always be there ffor eachother but there comes a time when a serpent comes out and you can be really 2faced, some more then others. but it's just part of life. everyone has good and evil in them

  23. An example of an innocent flower on the outside, but a serpent on the inside could be a friend. They seem like a good person and a friend on the outside, but maybe on the inside they are trying to steal from you, manipulate you, or are just using you to get to someone else. I personnaly have not experienced this so i cannont explain how i got through the sweet disguise to the serpent within.

  24. some people are good at hiding their true selves but as ksee said they can only hold it for so long. you see this when lady macbeth begins to go mad and eventually kills herself.

  25. Like voltage, i'll bring politics into this. But i'll use a specific example. Our president, President Nixon, seemed like a good guy at first, but just ended up being a manipulative snake in the end. It seems like Lady Macbeth sort of does this in the play. She seems innocent at first, then manipulates Macbeth into doing something vile. Which is kind of odd, since she told him to be the snake under the flower.

  27. Orcas (killer whales) are often considered beauties of the ocean. When observed at Sea World and other shows, orcas are capable of learning tricks and interacting with the swimmers. In their natural habitat, however, they are instinctive killers. In fact, killer whales are not whales at all; rather, they are dolphins that earned this nickname by their constant attacks on small whales. Their playful personalities displayed in shows portray this animal as an innocent creature; however, when found in nature they can be just as dangerous as the shark swimming underneath you.

  28. A person would be a great example of this because. There are people out there that are cruel and cheat and lie, But act as if they don't posses any of those nasty qualities. By putting on a fake mask and covering up the true them. Just like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had to to after killing Duncan.

  31. i feel that good is dominant in everyone. even the people that do so much evil usually do it for a good purpose. they just need what they are willing to fight for.
