Perhaps the premise of
In Cold Blood, and one of the primary themes within the text, is the American Dream. We all know this to be the notion that everyone, no matter whom or what they represent, is entitled to a life filled with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Who is entitled to achieve the American Dream? Why? Do all Americans have equal access to the American Dream? Why or why not?
Emmit:
ReplyDeleteEveryone has the right to the American Dream as long as they do not interfere with anyone else's. Dick and Perry certainly were entitled to pursue happiness, but lost this once they violated the Clutter family's.
chicaMJ:
DeleteI do agree that everyone is entitled to their american dream, but i disagree with you when you said that Dick and Perry lost it until they killed the Clutter Family. I believe they lost it long time ago because they had done other crimes before, again they met in a prison.
KyrieS.
DeleteI agree with chicaMJ because Dick and Perry lost their way to the American Dream since the first crime that they commited together or as individuals
Nikolay
ReplyDeleteThe American Dream is just a false paradise. It is the promise of something good and something beautiful, but in the end, it is just a marketing strategy that the United States has used to keep its potential as a the world's first tier power. Maybe some may gain material opulence and eventually ameliorate their lives, but it is necessary to comprehend that this dream has become itemized and it has a become a way for the United States to gain ilegal immigrants and expand their work force.
cooper: i respectfully disagree, the American Dream is very achiavable to those who display the will to do what is necessary to achieve thier goals, there are multiple examples of this throughout history, those like Perry who make excuses for themselves and try to convince themselves of everything that you just mentioned are those that dont ever achieve the american Dream
DeleteNikolay
DeleteThat is just the way that this works. The system shows that some might succeed, but what happens to the thousands of illegal immigrants who work very hard in order to achieve their dream and can't? What happens to those who look for a better life and then are deported to their original countries? What happens to those who work as hard as possible and never get nowhere? It is just part of the system.
Sugar2195: I completely disagree with you Nikolay and completely agree with Mrs. Krivel because I believe the American Dream is open to anyone who really works towards it. Each people have different thoughts and backgrounds but this doesn't mean that it is impossible to achieve it. It only means that for certain people to achieve it, it may require more dedication and hard work. THe American Dream is reachable for those who fight for what they believe and those who climb to reach the highest they can.
DeleteCopper: they fail in this system because they are not Americans so your argument is out the window, that is why they are ilegal, legal americans all have the same oppurtunity it is just up to them whether they are going to do more than conform
DeleteNikolay
DeleteBut isn't that what the United States wants us to see? Isn't that what they market towards other people? A life full of happiness and love for everyone? What about those Americans who work as hard as possible but end up being swallowed by the corporative power of people like Warren Buffet for example?
Cooper; Warren Buffet is a simple man who donates the majority of his money to charity, thats a poor example, and those who get lost in Corporaqte America is because they choose these dead end jobs instead of having entrepenenurial spirit to control thier futures
DeleteNikolay
DeleteBut isn't that part of the hard work? Isn't that how you're supposed to start, as a lowly serf?
lovepizza94
ReplyDeleteI believe that everyone who is willing to try and give their best effort can achieve the American Dream. I believe it takes a lot of effort and dedication to plan out your life and how to achieve this Dream, so if you try your best, you can achieve it. I also believe that all Americans have equal access to the American Dream, it only depends on whether you try and try until you reach what you want.
El "EC"
DeleteVery Good analysis my friend "lovepizza94". But I do disagree that everyone has equal access to the american dream. Some people are born into a very poor life and work very hard and cant achieve their american dream.
Joel
ReplyDeleteThe people who are entitled to the American Dream are the successful people full of values and education. They are entitled to yhis because they receive the most opportunities because of the factors previously said.i believe everyone is entitled to the Maerican Dream because everybody in America receive equal opportunities in education.
Dudzy
DeleteI disagree with Joel, not everyone in America has equal chances to education and the quality of education greatly varies. Where education may be a large determining factor of success in the American Dream its much more important for the person to have an intrinsic will to succeed over an extrinsic factor such as their education or environment.
KyrieS.
DeleteI disagree with "Dudzy" because if people want it, if they REALLY want it they will work hard in life and eventually rise from their current situation.
Dudzy
DeleteIn all due respect KyrieS. you just repeated what I said. The key to fulfilling the American Dream is in fact will power and having an appropriate personality. Having a negative personality may or may not be part of the "current situation" but it definitely is the determining factor of wether or not you accomplish the American Dream.
Joel
DeleteDudzy, so how you explain the people which achieve the American Dream without any education? There is alot of cases, believe me
Dudzy
ReplyDeleteWhat I noticed in this novel is that not everyone is entitled to the American Dream, only those who are able to work hard for what they want. In a way all Americans have and don't have equal access to the American Dream at the same time. Since everyone IS able to accomplish the American but ONLY if you have a hard working and persevering personality.
Coffeelover22
DeleteEveryone is "able" to work hard. Their is a difference between able and willing. Everyone is able to work hard but not everyone is willing to.
KyrieS.
ReplyDeleteEveryone is entitled to the AD. but not everyone is willing to work for it. This AD that everyone talks about sounds like if its suddenly going to appear in your life and most of the persons pursuing this life do not realize that they will have to work hard to achieve it. Everyone has the opportunity to the American Dream but only those who persevere and work hard excel in life and achieve their goal.
Coffeelover22
ReplyDeleteAll americans are entitled to achieve the american dream. Everyone is capable to achieve the american dream because we all are equal and have equal rights.
Even though all americans can reach the american dream only some do. Those that do are those who are willing to achieve it and work hard towards it.
An example of someone who works hard to achieve the american dream is Mr. Clutter, he worked hard and was a great employee. This all paid off and he was living a wonderful life.
An example of how someone is able to reach the american dream but does not want to work hard are Dick and Perry. Even though they had a chance to start again after they were out of jail, they decided to rob the Clutter family to have money instead of working hard for it and they ended up in jail.
El Bis Stek
ReplyDeleteThe Clutter killings are a turning point for the citizens of Holcomb and Garden City: for the first time, the dangerous wider world seems to threaten their peaceful existence, and their former naivete gives way to feelings of doubt, fear and suspicion.
Their version of the American dream of safety, security, and the ability to determine their own fate becomes undermined, if not entirely thwarted, by the victimization of the Clutters.
Their view of the world must suddenly include another kind of person, a poor, embittered, rootless person, for whom this dream was never an option in the first place.
Sugar2195: I believed the American Dream is accessible for everyone who search for it and works toward it. The American Dream is achieved through hard work and determination, just like the Clutter Family who we very successful because they had positive actions towards their American Dream. Sometimes people focuses more on their position and dont go outside the box to think of a way to reach their goals. Perry and Dick believed that the only way out was to murder and kill the Clutter Family. They believed that they will reach the American Dream the fast and easy way. The American Dream does not come to the people, the people need to search for it.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should be able to pursue the American dream. The path they take to get there is the problem. Nobody should take away somebody else's rights to achieve theirs. This being said, not everyone has the same access to this. Some people have an advantage on getting to where they want in life because they have money, intelligence etc.

ReplyDeleteI disagree with Nikolay, the American Dream is not a false paradise. I believe the American Dream is entitled to any one that is willing to work for it. It is entitled to anyone with values and the will to help their family. In the case of Dick and Perry, they corrupted the American Dream. They were not willing to earn it, they simply tried to steal from a family and when this failed they murdered them coldly. Dick and Perry ruined their second chance at the american dream, and this time for good.
forever alone
ReplyDeleteEveryone is entitled to achieve the American Dream. Everyone is allowed to and has the right to go for it. Nevertheless, not everyone has the same chances to reach the American Dream. It is harder for a homeless guy to reach the American Dream rather than a medium class guy who has a job. It is the same for Dick and Perry, it is harder for them to reach the American Dream because they have nothing and easier for someone like Nancy who is already living it.
WesliSnais
ReplyDeleteAnyone can be entitled to achieve the American Dream and everyone has equal access to the American Dream. The only things that can change anything is one self. It is about individual mentality, and self determination. I do believe that with responsibility and determination anyone can achieve the American Dream.
El Bis Stek
ReplyDeleteYes, the American Dream is accessible to everyone. I know people that has access to it and are minority that was raised in poverty. The government is very helpful to people who really need help its really up to the person if he or she really wants it. I was raised by a single mother who was not involved in my education because she didn't understand and could not help me. I went through the worst public schools yet I managed to go to college.
The American Dream is different for everyone, trust me, some people are glad to be here and would rather be here in poverty than rich in another country. We all have access to everything and anything in the U.S. It's up to the individual.
daddy t
ReplyDeletei do agree everyone has the right to purse happiness but based upon limits and rules, in this case Dick and Perry pursed their dreams but in a nother illicit manners, we all have different dreams and we can achieve them but on a good path not a shortcut..
Everyone is entitled to the american dream and everybody deserves it at the beginning, but its all about how they use their opportunities, if they waste their time and opportunities instead of trying to achieve their goals, then they do not deserve it. Obviously, not all americans have equal access to the american dream, some are born from privilege and have it easier, and those born from less wealthy families have a harder time getting to the top, it doesnt mean they cant, it just means they have to work harder.

ReplyDeleteEveryone is entitled to the american dream, everyone has the ability to persevere. It doesn't mean that only because we all have the right to it that we all will achieve it. We all have to work hard to get there and we have to be aware that we are not interfering with other people's dreams. Both Perry and Dick wanted to take the easy route to the american dream and they didn't care who they hurt to achieve this.
