As you read
In Cold Blood, you can't help but sympathize with Dick and Perry. They start to become more human and we almost feel bad for them, as if they never stood a chance against their upringings and environments. We begin to question what punishment would truly be fair for them, as both murderers and people. Is the death penalty a good solution to violent crime? Why or why not?
KyrieS.
ReplyDeleteThe death penalty is not a good solution because the government is just participating in this cycle of death. They should just keep the criminals that make a serious crime in jail for life.
chicaMJ:
Deletewhat if the criminals pay some years and then they make an arrangement to get out of jail and they kill more people?
daddy t
DeletekyrieS i totally disagree with you, why would you keep terrible murders in jail were they can one keep killing inside the prison, two they can escapeand neer change, and three ith they pay snetene and go out what assures you prison changed them??? they can just come back and even kill you

ReplyDeleteI do agree with the death penalty in this case, even though I don´t wish anyone´s death. But I do believe that Perry and Dick deserved the death penalty. It is so unfair that 4 honest and respected people had to die because of two crazy guys with crazy ideas! To such violent crime, death penalty is the solution. If it were in personal defense, for example, then that would be questionable.

ReplyDeleteI think that the death penalty should be made universal law. Murder is not the solution for everything, but it does give humanity the faculty to eradicate those who are mentally ill and those who have sadistic desires, allowing us to perfect our gene pool and therefore strive towards a common ideal. This is the process of taking away something that hurts society.
cooper; this death penalty as universal law that you speak of has already been tried out throughout history, famously by the Athenians writing out Draconian Law, this might work to an extent but some leniency most be ensured to cases of self defense.
DeleteMegaManx4
DeleteA very utopian and perfectionist view which is debateable. Although, making a the death penalty as universal law would be too controversial. As you mention, creating the perfect gene pool is considered a Marxist view. That's why humans have created asylums. To properly approach the mentally ill and change thier cognitive view. Rather then killing everyone, changing would be a better approac towards human life.

DeleteIt is nearly impossible to cure a schizophrenic. In that case, what would you do? Allow him to live on a life in which everything is false and in which he wants to commit suicide? Allow us to live in fear in a place where at any moment a gang of murderers is released and start killing everyone?

ReplyDeleteupringings are important but i believe we all choose what to make of things. I don't agree with death penalty but I also don't feel bad for them because they were the reason why two children didn't have the chance to grow up.

ReplyDeleteI believe death penalyty should be entitled only to serious crimes, and the Clutter family crime was a serious crime. They dodnt deserve to be killed, so I agree with the death penalty being used only in really violent and serious crimes. It can really scare criminals and prevent other violent crimes in the world.
Blu: I think it is now our right to take the lives of others. God should be the only one taking lives because it was he who gave it. There is just enough for so many people in jail though, sometimes people don't change. Maybe it's the only solution for some people. They should pay for their acts and if that is getting killed, so be it.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with ¨Joel¨
ReplyDeleteI also believe that the death penalty can be really useful to prevent other violent crimes as it would scare criminals and would make them think twice before commiting such atrocious acts.
chichaMJ:
ReplyDeletehow do you really know they will be suffering when soing community service and staying in jail? Do you really think that all criminals will feel bad of their actions? some would do it again if they could and not regret it.

ReplyDeleteThe death penalty is the ultimate scare tactic. It may hurt some feelings along the way, but it sets a greater punishment to felons.

ReplyDeleteCapote's opinion on the death penalty is central to the theme in my opinion. It is obvious that Capote opposes the McNaughton Rule and wants to make a political statement. Seeing the execution through Dewey's eyes closes the book on two bad guys and a solved crime. The journalistic aspects of this story present a full picture of an actual crime almost all in real time. Capote's supreme skills as a writer make his experimental work his masterpiece and creates a successful new form.

ReplyDeleteHow about no. Killing is sometimes necessary. Your actions will be punished eventually, be it in the afterlife or anywhere else. But for the sake fo those living in the world, murderers should be destroyed.
Locking down people is too soft.
Joel
ReplyDeleteBis Stek, so you believe we should let criminals thrive in a fearless tpwards law just to increase their victims list? We need harsh measures, even if they are considered inhumane.
Sugar2195: I believe the death penalty is not a good solution because they are really not suffering. By killing them they are not making them realize what their actions have cost, and instead they need to learn from their mistakes. I believe a good penalty would be stay in the toughest jail for years and doing community service because this way they will pay off for what they did.
ReplyDeletePlatypus Rex
DeleteI disagree with Sugar2195 because by implementing the death penalty you would stop the suffering. You would avoid more killing and others will learn from the outcome someone else received.
*fearless way towards law
ReplyDeleteThe death penalty only brings the executioner to the same level as the criminal. The death penalty may stop many would be criminals from doing these types of things, but they are not a human way of dealing with crime, it would be best to just give them life sentence, you take a lot away from them, just not their life. I do not think it was a suitable sentence for Perry and Dick, life sentence was the most adequate punishment.

ReplyDeleteI do believe that the death penalty is the best sentence that could be applied to Dick and Perry because both of them are murders and killed the Clutter family. Their is no sympathy that can intervine because they did not feel sympathy for the Clutter family, who were good people as Capote introduce them.
Sugar2195: I totally agree with you Coffeelover22 because by killing Dick and Perry you are not making them suffer, so making them do community service and years in jail will pay off for what they did.
ReplyDeleteDudzy
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with Bis Stek but the alternitves to death penalty are disadvantageous to us.
forever alone
ReplyDeleteI'm in favor of death penalty because I believe that if by killing someone you could save more and innocent lives. This could be the case for Dick and Perry because they could kill more innocent people in the future and by killing them you could have been saving more lives. But this is just an assumption. You can never know what will they d =o in the future.
